A Backgammon board and game pieces.

Backgammon Strategy

The game’s structure is straightforward: players race to move their pieces to the home board while defending against opponents’ attacks. Whether you play offensively or defensively, you can improve your backgammon strategy with these tips:

1. Start strong. A pragmatic first move sets the tone of the game. Secure a key slot with your first move, create a strong fortress in your opponent’s home board, or split your back checkers for a more balanced approach.

2. Count your pips. Measure your progress by regularly tracking the number of points to bring your checkers home. For instance, the 12-point and the five-point are six pips apart.

3. Adjust your strategy. Be flexible and adjust as necessary. A long-term strategy is useful, but it shouldn’t determine your every move.

4. Learn from your mistakes. No one wins all of their games. However, the best players always learn from their mistakes. Think of losses as lessons and use them to improve your calculation, decision-making, and risk-taking.

Offensive Play

Offensive players attack the opponent’s pieces while advancing their own pieces toward the home board. Use the following strategies to win the race with aggressive play:

  • Attack your opponent’s vulnerable pieces to disrupt their development in the early phase of the game.

  • Advance your checkers as quickly as possible across the board, capitalizing on your first few moves.

  • Press your advantage once you get a lead in the pip count. Bear off your pieces as efficiently as possible while minimizing risks.

  • Aim for a quick victory with the blitz strategy. Blitzing combines aggressive attack with a strong home board. Slow players can be taken by surprise with a blitz strategy, gifting you a decisive win.

  • When under attack or falling behind, fight back by trapping your opponent’s pieces or sending them to the bar.

While offensive play can give you an early lead and put your opponent on the back foot, it can also leave you vulnerable to mistakes and retaliatory attacks. Avoid taking unnecessary risks while leveraging your advantage.

Defensive Play

A defensive player’s goal is to prepare for aggressive attacks, protecting his pieces until his opponent makes a mistake. Use the following strategies to parry aggressive strikes and get your pieces safely to your home board:

  • Slow your opponent’s progress by creating anchors in his home board. Even if the opposing pieces arrive there quickly, they will be unable to cross over the barricade until your opponent rolls a higher number than the made points.

  • Protect your pieces from hits by spreading them across the board, making them less vulnerable. This also enables you to respond to your opponent’s moves across quadrants as necessary.

  • Create defensive primes (a series of occupied points) to halt advancing enemy pieces. Primes also serve as a refuge for your checkers in case of possible hits.

  • Play the holding game by maintaining strategic anchors. While this strategy lengthens the game, it gives you time to improve your position and advance your checkers safely.

  • Punish your opponent’s mistakes by targeting exposed blots. Sometimes, a hot-headed player will advance his pieces recklessly, giving you the opportunity to target vulnerable pieces and seize the lead.

Playing safe may protect you from attacks, but it can also cause you to fall behind. When playing defensively, advance your pieces to your home board and bear them off before your opponent does so.
